Executive Flyers February 2003 Newsletter
Congratulations to:
Malcolm Lenson and Renee Whitton for passing their multi-engine checkrides; Jarrett Conrad for passing his instrument rating checkride; and Ryan Evanson and Rod Kirby for winning the monthly drawing of an hour of instruction or a month’s dues.
Ground schools
Private pilot ground school started about two weeks ago, so if you are interested, it’s not too late to join. If you know of anyone else who would be interested, please give them our telephone number or email address. The private course costs $150 for members and $200 for non-members, plus supplies. You may audit for half price if you already have the license or rating. This is a great time of year to brush up on your aeronautical knowledge. Call the office for details. We will be starting another instrument ground school as soon as we have enough people signed up. If you have been thinking about the instrument rating, now is the time to call the office and sign up for the course.
Please help us
There have been several instances of pilots leaving the master switch on after flying lately. Aircraft 24 volt batteries cost several hundred dollars. Please turn off the master switch!
Private Pilot Scholarship!
The good news is that Renee, one of our flight instructors, found this on the Internet:
Scholarship for flight training
The LeRoy W. Homer, Jr. Foundation is offering three scholarships to young people (age 16 to 23) who wish to obtain Private Pilot certification.
LeRoy was the First Officer on United Flight 93 on September 11th, 2001. In his memory, his family and friends formed the Foundation to encourage young people to pursue careers in aviation. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2003.
If anyone is interested in applying for a scholarship, go to the Foundation web site at http://www.leroywhomer.com -- the application form is on the website.
Information on how to make a donation to the Foundation can also be found on the website. This scholarship will pay for your entire private pilot license. You must apply by February 28, so time is limited. The bad news is that Executive Flyers can't do the training because we are not a certified Cessna Pilot Training Center. There are some in the area, however, so if you are interested, or know someone who might be, get the information to them right away. Good luck! (I apologize for the lateness of the newsletter which makes it impossible to apply this year. Please see the web site for next year. Ed)
Aviation Career Seminar
We have the next FREE aviation career seminar scheduled for Saturday, April 26th from 9:00 am to 12 noon in the conference room at Executive Airport. At these seminars we have pilots from various stages in their careers talk about why they got into aviation and how they trained to get to their current position. In addition to the speakers, there will be free handouts of career information. If you are thinking of a career in aviation or know someone who might be, call the office to sign up as space is limited.
Are you current?
The weather is improving and it feels like time to go flying again. Check your logbook to see when you flew last. If it was more than 3 months ago, or if you're just feeling rusty, sign up for a refresher flight. You'll go up with an instructor and work on landings or anything else that you feel needs work. We'll give you a 10% discount on both plane and instructor for this flight. (Only one per season, please.) You will be more confident and a safer pilot.
