Flying Companion Seminar

The Sacramento chapter of the 99s are putting on a flying companion seminar on Saturday, April 21 from 8:30 to 4:30 in the Executive Airport conference room. It will cover navigation, aircraft basics, radio procedures, weather wisdom and more. Non-pilot, flying companions will benefit greatly from this presentation. It will make them feel much more comfortable when flying and teach them to help with the navigation, radio, etc. The $60 donation to the 99s covers all course materials, lunch and a certificate of completion. Please send a check made out to the Sacramento Valley 99s to Sharon Raney, 112 Hidden Lake Circle, Sacramento CA 95832 to register for the program. For more information, contact Dorothy Flynn at (530) 666-2992 or Bobbie Campbell at (916) 362-3164.

Twin for sale

Our twin engine Piper Seminole, N2882C is for sale. The asking price is $110,000. We would like to keep it on line as a lease back. If you are interested in purchasing the plane, call Sacramento Aviation at (916) 424-1800. If you want some information about leasing the plane to Executive Flyers, call Ed at the office.

Flight time and a free lunch

One of our instructors has come up with some thought provoking questions and has asked me to include them in the newsletter. Here's his message to you and the questions:
"There is such a thing as a free lunch.
If you can answer the following questions, I will take you to lunch, albeit a cheap lunch upstairs.

All you have to do is write down your answer on a sheet of paper along with your name and put it in the "Free Lunch" envelope. I will pick through the answers until I find a correct one. Priority will be given to answers that were not researched, marked "guess" as opposed to those marked "researched". I will pick the first one that is correct. If there are no correct "guesses" then the first "researched" answer selected wins. The winner will be selected on or about May 1, 2007.

Here are the questions. Use the information below to compute your answer.

QUESTIONS

1. How much flight time can you log for the day?

2. How much time will your use of the airplane count against the next 100 hour inspection? (Time in Service)

INFORMATION

When you get to the aircraft you note the following time from the Tachometer and Hobbs meter:

Tach time - 2545.06

Hobbs meter - 234.0

You do your preflight and once completed you proceed to the fuel pump and fill up. Taxi to fuel takes 3 minutes. When finished fueling, you start the airplane, call ground control intending to taxi to the active runway for takeoff. The tower advises you that Executive Flyers wants you to taxi to the maintenance facility to the south of the tower, and without shutting down, pick up a new copy of the aircraft registration. That takes 9 more minutes.

You note that you leave the maintenance facility at 10:05 and reach the runup area at 10:10. After your runup you taxi to runway 20 and call for takeoff. The tower operator advises you that the wind has changed sufficiently so he clears you to runway 30. When you get to runway 30 you call for takeoff and the airplane lifts into the air at 10:30.

Your first leg takes you to Stockton where you land at 11:30, taxi back for takeoff, this time taking off at 11:40.
This leg takes you to University Airport at Davis, CA, where you land at 12:40, again taxi back for takeoff, at 12:45.
Your last leg returns you to SAC where you land at 13:15 and after taxiing from the far end of runway 20, you reach the chalks at 13:25.
When you finally tie down the airplane you record the following time from the Tachometer and Hobbs meter:
Tach time - 2548.11
Hobbs meter - 237.8"

G1000 glass cockpit training

A G-1000 ground school will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 9-1 at Executive Flyers. The course will cost $30 and will cover all of the required ground school checkout requirements for a G-1000 cockpit. If any of you would like to move up to the glass cockpit, please email Ed or call the office. Glass cockpits are becoming more and more common and knowledge of them will be essential in the future. If you'd like to find out more about them, we have both a book and a CD course by Max Trescott that are both excellent.

Fly the Fortress

The EAA is touring the country with their B-17, "Aluminum Overcast". If you would like to see the plane or take a ride in it, it will be at Concord on May 1-2, Truckee May 4-6, Napa May 8-9 and at Mather field in Sacramento May 11-13. Call 1-800-359-6217 or visit http://www.b17.org to get more details and make a reservation.
