Executive Flyers June 2003 Newsletter

Congratulations to:

Christopher Henry and Rob HarrisRob Harris for soloing; Fred Cotton and Tom Morstein-Marx for passing their instrument rating checkrides; Paul Albuquerque, Kevin Gallaway, Nathan Loyd and Richard Markwell for passing their private pilot checkrides and Rick Johnson and Joseph Ryder for winning the monthly drawing of an hour of instruction or a month’s dues.

Mountain Flying

With all the heat in the valley, the mountains look very inviting in the summer. Lake Tahoe is only about 45 minutes away by light plane and Reno is only a little farther. Before you pack up the family or just try it solo, it would be a good idea (and be required to fly the new 172, N5101E) to get a mountain flying checkout with an instructor. You’ll spend some time on the ground going over mountain weather, density altitude, distance required to land and take off at high altitudes and the go/no go decision making for mountain flying. Then you’ll fly to several mountain airports to see what it is really like. The airports might include Truckee, Tahoe Valley, Blue Canyon or Auburn. Flight time is a little over two hours and you’ll gain a confidence in your ability to decide when to go flying in the mountains and to fly safely. Call the office to sign up for a mountain flight.

Ground Schools

Private pilot ground school started late in May. If you are still interested in attending, please call the office. The ground school will be taught two nights a week for about 12 weeks. The cost is $150 for members and $200 for non-members, plus books and supplies which cost about $190.00. If you already have your license, you can audit the course to brush up on your aeronautical knowledge for half price. We’ll start an instrument ground school as soon as we have enough people signed up. Call the office to sign up for it today.

Email addresses, please

The setup for the on-line billing is proving to be a longer term project than I originally thought. It is coming along however, and we’ll start in July or August. We would like to send the statements and newsletter over the internet in order to keep our postage costs down. In order to do that, we’ll need your email address. Please send it to us when you mail in your payments after the next statement, or just send them to me at callaway@execflyers.com. If you don’t have or don’t want to use your email address, please let me know that so we can continue to send your statements and newsletter by snail mail. Help us keep the costs down. Thanks.

“Operation Takeoff” returns

The flight service station at Rancho Murieta has reopened for their operation “Takeoff” program. They have classes once a month, limited to 12 people, and they “bring you, the aviator into the facility for several hours of instruction and information about the roles and tasks accomplished by your AFSS and how best to make use of the services we provide. It is accompanied by an Operational Orientation to let you see what goes on “on the other side” of the phone or microphone when you contact us. The program runs from 9:00 am until about noon and you can contact the AFSS at (916) 354-0161 to get on the reservation list.” The June class is already full and the next class will be July 19th. You will get the safety meeting credit for the “Wings” program if you attend operation Takeoff. Call them to sign up for this most informative class.
