Cessna 12345, VOR approach, inbound

If you fly to enough airports, you have heard the above radio transmission many times. For the IFR pilot, it is very clear. For the VFR pilot, it may not make much sense at all. In the first place, the “VOR” part might also be “ILS”, “NDB”, “GPS” or “Localizer”. From what direction is the approach coming? What does “inbound” mean? This radio transmission means that an instrument pilot is approaching the airport flying by reference to the instruments rather than visually. If the weather is good, he may be using a hood or other view-limiting device and have a safety pilot flying with him. Unfortunately, the VFR pilot does not have the “approach plates” available to show where the other plane is with reference to the airport. So keep your scan going and report your position on the CTAF for the “inbound” plane.

July 4th and office help needed

The office will be closed on July 4th. If you wish to fly then, you must make your aircraft reservations in advance. We need someone to manage the office on Sundays. The hours are 8-5, and the person would be responsible for scheduling aircraft, explaining flying to people who come in with questions, and using the Quickbooks program on the computer to sell pilot supplies and charge for flights. It’s not difficult once you have trained for a few days and it would help out the club. Please call Deena in the office.

E-mail addresses, please

The setup for the on-line billing is proving to be a longer term project than I originally thought. It is coming along however, and we’ll start in August or September. We would like to send the statements and newsletter over the internet in order to keep our postage costs down. In order to do that, we’ll need your email address. Please send it to us when you mail in your payments after the next statement, or just send them to me at callaway@execflyers.com. If you don't have or don't want to use your email address, please let me know that so we can continue to send your statements and newsletter by snail mail. Help us keep the costs down. Thanks.

Wanted: Student and Renter Pilots

Student and renter pilots are the lifeblood of a flight school. This spring has been a slow one for the flight school business for a variety of reasons – the economy, the rain, the heat, etc, etc. You can help by recommending us to anyone you know who might be interested in learning how to fly or to a pilot friend looking for a place to rent well-maintained airplanes. Executive Flyers will have been in business for 23 years this September. We are an FAA and VA approved flight school. If you recommend someone to us who joins the club and puts your name on his application, we’ll credit your account with sixty dollars as our way of saying, “thank you”.

N738ZL for sale

We would like to keep it on line as a leaseback, so let Ed know if you would be interested in that. Call Becky Watts at (916) 427-7390 for details and cost of the plane.
